What Are Nordic Berries?

Also known as cloudberries, Nordic Berries are natural fruits that feature many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Native to the Northern Hemisphere, they grow in the Nordic countries and the Baltic states and across northern Russia, east to the Pacific Ocean. More compact populations are also a little bit south, in Germany’s Weser and Elbe valleys, where they are under legal protection.

Through the moorlands of Britain and Ireland, they are only a little bit spread. As far as the American continent goes, cloudberries grow in the wilderness of Canada, Alaska, northern Minnesota, New Hampshire and Maine. Small populations develop in Long Island and New York.

The Nordic berry grows only in cold temperatures that go way beyond -40°C. It is very sensitive to salt and dry conditions. You can find it in bogs, marshes and wet meadows. Their leaves are important food for caterpillars.

Nordic Berry Health Benefits

The plant’s fruits are golden yellow in color, and soft and juicy in structure. Their taste is tarty and a little bit sour, due to their high content of vitamin C. When over-riped, they get a creamy texture, very similar to yogurt, becoming sweet in taste. This is the reason why they are often made into juices, jams, liqueurs or tarts.

Nordic Berries Uses

Due to their very increased vitamin C content, they are very appreciated by Nordic seafarers and Inuits, as protection against scurvy. The benzoic acid in them acts as the most natural preservative.
